Hangin on a Glimmer of Hope

It's been 8 days since my aunt was hospitalised...gone thru brain surgery for her sudden brain tumour & haemorrhage & right now she is still in coma. At first, i was hopeful...then as days passed, she looked more n more lifeless, dependin fully on the life support machine.

I felt so helpless, dunno to hope for her to survive or that she would pass away quickly, peacefully without havin to struggle so much. The closest ones I noe, like me, have difficulty tryin to sleep at nite, torn with conflicted emotions, traumatised by the image of her hooked up to all kinda tubes.

Yesterday I hardly touched her, it felt like she was no longer there but tis mornin, my colleague said his grandpa undergo similar circumstances & he came back to live with lotsahopes, touches & care from the family. I decided not to give up so easily despite the deterioratin changes we see physically on her. Her heart, although assisted, is beating well. Perhaps her determination to live on is strong despite her failing brain.

Soon after, the son said she is now not relyin on medicine to keep blood pressure up.

Masya Allah....it seems today is a day of gladtiding. Indeed, God is with those who are patient, who seek help with patience & prayers....

Subhanallah walhamdulillah wa lailahaillallah, wallahu akbar!~

We shall not give up hopin for the best, till Doc says it's time. In the Lord, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful, i shall put my trust & faith.

Amin

Keep Calm

Last month i came across a few twists to this phrase "Keep Calm & Carry On", which was initially a poster put up by the British Government in 1939 to boost the morale of the public in the event of invasion at the beginning of the World War II.

Keep Calm and Curry On.
Keep Calm and Make Tea.
Keep Calm and Read Quran.

I figured I could join in the fun, with an Islamic purpose....So i came up with tis in reflection of recent happenings (which I highlighted in the last blog):

Keep Calm and Remember Rasulullah(The Prophet)

Why such? Perhaps because he never fail to Keep Calm and Doesn't Get Ugly, no matter.
Below is a beautiful article to remind us of his gentle ways, as a Messenger as well as a Servant of God.

May Peace & Blessings be upon him.

Being Religious Without Being a Jerk

“There is nothing that has gentleness in it except that it is beautified, and there is nothing that has harshness in it except that it makes it ugly. So be calm, O Aisha!”

The above words were spoken by our beloved Messenger ﷺ to his wife, `A’isha radi allahu `anha (may Allah be please with her). A group of people had passed by the Prophet ﷺ and our Mother `A’isha, and said to him: “As-sa’amu `alaykum” (death be upon you).”  It was a wordplay on “As-salaamu `alaykum (peace be upon you)”, with the intent of ridiculing the Prophet ﷺ. `A’isha (ra) became so angry that she rose up and began yelling at them that death should be upon them, and the curse of God, and so on.

At this, the Prophet ﷺ turned towards her, and spoke these words, telling her to calm down, and not to lose her composure, even in the face of personal insult. This man, our Messenger ﷺ, was the pillar of tranquility in an ocean of chaos. Our mother Aisha (ra), did this out of a pure, sincere, and unyielding love for the Prophet (saw). Not out of any arrogance or pride. For her it was an anger rooted in love, a desire to protect her Prophet from those who hated him. May Allah be pleased with her.

Unfortunately however, many of us react with harshness when faced with religious differences, especially WITHIN our own ummah – not out of love, but out of arrogance. When we examine ourselves today, especially those among us who are students of religious knowledge or believers striving to better ourselves, a tragic observation can often be made: Religiosity often turns people into jerks.

Many have witnessed this story: A young man or woman who used to be friendly, well-mannered, who treated people well, sadly turns into someone who shows mild annoyance upon meeting people who follow a different religious opinion. He shows anger when presented with arguments against his or her own point of view. Finally, he or she begins to pronounce judgment against others—pronouncing minor differences in opinion as proofs of disbelief.

When told to calm down, to stop being judgmental—the response comes in one of many flavors:

  • “Brother, I am enjoining the good and forbidding the evil!”
  • “We are defending the Sunnah!”
  • “When people are harsh against the Sunnah, we will be harsh in defending it!”

And so on.

Over what kinds of issues? Not the serious lack of counseling services in the community. Not the difficulty that our youth are having in protecting their faith from intellectual attack. Not the issues of domestic abuse, poverty, family breakups or homelessness afflicting non-Muslims and Muslims around us.

But the length of our pants and whether or not they are above our ankles, the lengths of our beards, etc. Perhaps one’s adherence or lack thereof to a group or organization. What we think about pseudo-philosophical concepts about the essence of God’s attributes.  Such meanness and harshness occurs not over what is physically affecting people, but over a disagreement between opinions in our minds. Over varying textual interpretations that result in different legal opinions or a creedal points unknown to the majority of the world’s Muslims.

Why does this happen to us when almost nothing is more important in our religion than the subjugation of our egos to the Power and Oneness of God?

The Remedy

“Islam takes us and throws us so we fall totally in love with The Creator. Yet, somehow some of us turn it into a way to look down upon the creation.”

This happens because somewhere along the line in striving to love God, the ego—the innermost part of our soul which continuously wishes to be glorified and exalted over others—made our religiosity a means of doing just that. The religion exists to crush the ego, and enslave it towards the worship of its Creator.

When we say AllahuAkbar (God is the Greatest), the true meaning of this, when one explores Arabic grammar, is “God is the Greatest Above All Things”—including our loves, our hates, our desires, our weaknesses, our dreams, our hopes, our very essences. Success in reaching our desires is only through His permission, and the power to overcome our weaknesses is only through His Mercy. This phrase is formulated to remind us of Allah’s greatness over ourselves and over every element of our lives. It acknowledges the overwhelming power that is Allah subhanahu wa ta`ala (exalted is He).

On the ego’s path to enslavement and the realization of recognizing Allah (swt) alone as the sole object of adoration and love, our ego sought a way out so it would not have to undergo such tribulation and destruction; so that it would not have to give up its position as the one that is praised and feels valued.

That ego essentially hijacks the religiosity of the individual and takes it on a detour. What is that detour? Rather than letting Islam be Islam and allowing the soul to get lost in the wonders of Allah’s power, the limitless nature of His love, the magnanimous breadth of His Mercy, the immeasurable depth of His knowledge, the care and affection that He showers upon His creation—the ego detours the soul into LOVING ITSELF.

When the soul begins to love itself, it becomes dissatisfied with not only God, but with God’s creation. It sees its own knowledge, opinion, and worldview as superior to all others. In order to maintain its false notion of being humble, it will even fake humility to those on the outside: “I’m nobody, I’m not knowledgeable”—while secretly harboring contempt for all those who follow different opinions or ideas about Islam. It is easy to recognize this tendency in ourselves. It happens when our religious discourse, our religious speech, and our religious vocabulary become less about loving God, adoring his Messenger ﷺ, bettering ourselves and more about creedal disagreements, legal fine points, and how one group is bad or another is good.

When religion becomes more about how one person does not practice the way that pleases us  (even if we are correct in expressing the opinion of orthodox Islam) than about how we can please God, the religion has essentially turned into a tool to make us feel better about ourselves.

This does not mean we should turn off legitimate criticism in religious discourse. Enjoining the good and forbidding evil means that we must take an active interest in our communities, and in striving to develop our communities and our religious practices in a way that is healthy, natural, and allows Muslims from all backgrounds to be included and non-Muslims to feel welcome.

Rather, it is time we examine our deeper motives and feelings when we criticize and put forth negativity: “Am I criticizing and putting forth negativity because my criticism and the way I am putting it forth will actively help to prevent harm and bring benefit? Or am I criticizing to ridicule, make myself feel better, and make others see me as superior?”

Answering this question correctly and being sincere is the difference between the religious jerk and a servant of God.

A Summer by the Lake

So from Kyoto, we made our way to the last destination of our holidays...Lake Kawaguchi. Since we missed the opportunity to go up to Mt Fuji the last time we were in Japan, we did juz tt tis time, thus makin Kawaguchiko our base. It is a lovely lil resort town, there are flowers everywhere! Tis place kinda reminds me of the roads ard my dorm in MU....quiet with slopes with whiffs of eucalyptus in the air but here, I get whiffs of lavender! Love it!

We stayed in Royal Kawaguchiko Hotel with an in-house onsen(hot spring) and a room view of the lake. It feels so relaxin here, it truly felt like summer! Felt like I could stay here forever, grow some nice veges in the mornin & take a nice stroll along the lake in the late afternoon! Ahh how nice tt'd be!~

Thank u for movin on, Ma-On!

It was a grey mornin with slight drizzles on 20th July, it must have been very windy & rainy the nite before as we saw a couple of brollies strewn onto lil shrubs near our hotel. We headed to Kyoto hopin that Typhoon Ma-on would not spoil our sight-seein. On the way there, we saw rivers flooded with strong water current flowin thru...We could only pray hard that our Shinkansen train journey would be safe & smooth & definitely do not want to be caught in the flood.

We were graced with safety & upon reachin Kyoto, it seems like the typhoon has moved on... After droppin our luggage at the hostel, we rented bikes & cycled our way to Kiyomizu-dera Temple & the Fushimi Inari Taisha shrine. Oh i so love the streets & sceneries of Kyoto! They simply exude tis peaceful & tranquility feel on me! I think hubby felt it too! Cycling is prob the best way to assimilate them all...givin my weary heels a gd break as the heart is filled with delight as we peddled on! That nite, we went Geisha-spottin and saw 3! All moved ard sneakily & shufflin rather quickly...Kejap ada, kejap tak de...No chance to snap a proper pic of em, especially in low light!

The next day we went over to Osaka to meet my online friend. Like a blind date not knowing how she looked exactly & with a tad bit lost in translation Jap-English, we met over Shabu Shabu and she took us ard Shinsaibashi, Dotonbori & Nipponbashi. It was a fun experience! I luv networkin with like-minded people online...So far thru Multiply & Instagram, I have awesome company!

The next day we made our way to Lake Kawaguchi, which has its own set of charm as well! Anyhoo I cannot get enuff of Kyoto...i think we left too fast....Unlike Paris, our first impression of Kyoto was lovely! Perhaps we shall return.

Beat ya, Typhoon Ma-On we took on Tokyo first!

Belle Vere

I am tryin to get used to the onset of aging cos I can definitely sense the drop in metabolism! My arms are gettin bigger & flabby, my tummy's enjoyin much good food thus the paunch keeps pilin & oh don't get me started on the cellulites. I don't dare to weigh myself after surgery in case i might have juz weigh double of my age already! I've always been wantin to exercise but hmm aside from a couple of times cyclin, hurhur i haven't been puttin that much of an effort.

I stumbled upon Vogue Italia's cover story for June and somewhat find myself smilin. I not only luv the photography but it reminds me that I Should Love Myself whatever shape I am! If someday i end up bein Big & Curvy, i will still be BEAUTIFUL & not lose my Sensuality!

Umm I'd love to share the photos that I saw from the magazine.....A lil warnin though, they are provocative & contain some nudity. Viewer's discretion required though i feel that they are tastefully done & pleasure to the eyes~

Melancholia

I sit today yearning
Of moments lost
Not that of a Champion League title that went to Barcelona
But the moments reignited when I met the wanderin muse Malika
Moments of pure joy in our hearts
No other could invoke
Than beautiful rhythms of the djembe & invitin percussions
Swayin bodies
Hypnotizin beats
Ganja is of no need

In those moments
I was lost
In those moments
I let loose
In those moments
I feel peace
In those moments
I unleash my dormant soul
In those moments
I found me

A New Awakening?

Last nite I read that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew & Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong have decided to vacate their posts respectively. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong shall now be the sole leader to steer our country along with the newly formed cabinet after the General Election.

Is this an exciting new beginning for our Nation? It seems like the Elders are finally listening and finally takin the initiatives to step down gracefully instead of fear-mongering. They have learnt that we are NOT afraid of change...we WANT change!

We dunno for sure what it'll be like in the future, with new directions & new style of leadership. And with all things New, we cannot expect things to be all that perfect either, so we shall learn along the way as a Nation. I hope Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will be the present day inspiration of change, similar to or better than his daddy was some years ago. Everyone of us shall remember the elders' contributions to buildin tis nation in the past, no doubt but right now, it is time for our Prime Minister to shine. And for PAP to fulfill their promise to "transform" the party for the better for the people! Also for the opposition parties to up their acts & show that they are worth the seats won for the parliament.

I shall always remember GE2011, it is special even though i was denied the chance to vote. Tis felt somewhat like V for Vendetta, the juggernauts have fallen! Power to the People & Viva la Revolution!

GE 2011

No surprises...PAP won the overall election but this time, it got Hammered by the Workers Party in Aljunied thus losin two nice dudes, George Yeo & Zainul Abideen Rashid and now we shall have more oppositions sittin in the Parliament to ketuk kepala kerajaan in case it falls "asleep" & did not listen to the people. This election is one helluva excitin one...from bein apathetic, I actually bothered to listen to rallies (on YouTube)! Young candidates like Nicole Seah & Tin Pei Ling were sensations, be it gettin good or bad publicity for their respective parties. But i'm pretty disappointed that after all these years, i'm still denied of voting thanx to the existence of the Wise Old Man in Tanjong Pagar.Well I won't be discussin who should win or who should have gotten kicked out instead & all, enuff of tt already.

Here I would like to compile some of the best vids made by my fellow Singaporeans to mark this historic event. Some time ago it was said, Singaporeans cannot think out of the box...now when we do, we are said to be disrespectful/ungrateful of the past. Well it doesn't matter what the naysayers says, eventually we'll figure things out along the way...life as it is, is filled with changes & struggles...who says it'll be easy if we are to be a First World country? Therefore I quote Mr Chen Show Mao...MAJULAH SINGAPURA UNTUK SEMUA!!

And Mr Returning Officer...Please return to announce the results of our next election, u Hot stuff!! Ur pokerface, ur perfect hair parting, ur monotonous voice...How in the world u made us all listen? Extraordinaire indeed!! Thank u for servin the Nation so late at nite! U the Man!

Tucked in the rows of beautifully conserved shophouses along East Coast Road, Pavé is a lil gem full of chocolates & confectioneries delights! Tis was probably the first lil cafe that hubby was seen not complainin abt the service or the desserts itself.

The cakes were beautifully presented & uber fresh! He had 100% Ichigo, which is a strawberry shortcake while I had For Alice, a truly beautiful tri-flavoured cake! Everythin was so lovely...the in-house music was French tunes...addin a lil boho chic mood to our lil rendezvous while we savour our cakes, sip tea & capuccino....with me snappin away & him, playin his iPhone monopoly. Habits of the heart to counter bigotry

Growing religious expression here isn't the problem - it's what's behind it we should be wary of

by Mohamed Imran Mohamed Taib
There are uncanny similarities between Mullah Mohammed Omar's order to the Taliban to destroy Afghanistan's Bamiyan Buddha statues in 2001, and the recent burning of the Quran by American Pastor Terry Jones that sparked a mob in Pakistan which left 12 dead.

Both started as fringe actors who gained global attention through the media. Both share a narrow vision of religion. Both chose to attack symbols of other religions to make a point. For Terry Jones and Mohammed Omar, their narrow visions dictate that their religion is on a collision course with all others. Beneath that vision lies prejudices and stereotypes that caricature other religions in the most essentialist and prejudicial way: One depicting Buddhists as idol-worshippers, another depicting Islam as a violent religion.

At the centre of their diatribe is politics, not religion.

As a small cosmopolitan city-state, Singapore cannot allow such events to affect interfaith relations here. In fact, with the growing conservatism in Malaysia and the increasing violence in Indonesia towards minority groups, religious conflict and tension seem to be headed closer to our shores. What will be our response?

On Saturday, the National University of Singapore (NUS) University Scholars' Programme, together with the Department of Malay Studies and the NUS Interfaith Society, organised an interfaith dialogue on "Religions in Conversations: Reflections on Singapore". Such dialogue fronted by young people is increasingly shaping a new Singapore landscape.

It marks the growing realisation that dialogue is key to addressing the religious divide in today's world. No longer is dialogue shunned for fear of "saying the wrong things" and upsetting a religious community. This was once the perception, driven by the polemical approach to faith by religious fundamentalists in all camps - this is the reason various regulations came into place, including the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act enacted in 1990.

Thus, the message, at least till a decade ago, was to keep religions apart. But times are changing. Since September 11, perceptions have changed.

Instead of keeping religions apart, Singapore's leaders realised the need to foster greater interactions. There have been visible changes in policy to promote dialogue and interaction, such as with the formation of the Inter-Racial and Religious Confidence Circle in 2002 and the rolling out of the Community Engagement Programme in 2006.

INTRAFAITH DIFFERENCES

Today, a lot more people realise that increasing religious expression is not the problem. The problem lies with the kind of orientation within that expression.

For example, if a person consumes halal food and refuses to eat beside someone who takes non-halal food, the problem lies with the act of self-exclusion - not the consumption of halal food.

If the orientation behind a religious expression is of the exclusivist, supremacist and intolerant type, then we ought to be wary. Measures need to be taken to ensure it does not become dominant in our society.

But if the orientation is of the inclusive, egalitarian and progressive sort, then we ought to celebrate these expressions as part of our diverse religious landscape. The latter may even help strengthen our identity as a cosmopolitan society where diversity is celebrated and cultural exchanges lead to the greater common good.

The challenge before us, therefore, is to ensure that social policies are able to distinguish the diversity within each religious tradition. Interfaith awareness must go hand-in-hand with intrafaith.

No religion is monolithic and all religions can be susceptible to extremist elements driven by politics and narrow interests. The direction each religious community takes - whether the path to greater openness and embracing of the other, or down the road of insularity and conservatism - will depend to a large extent on the elites at the helm.

Thus far, Singapore has done well to keep religious bigotry from occupying centrestage in our religious life. Legislation such as the Sedition Act and the Maintenance of Religious Harmony Act has been effective, while institutions like the Inter-Religious Organisation, Onepeople.Sg and the Harmony Centre have helped build bridges between communities.

Activists for faith

But the legal and institutional approach may not be sufficient. What is needed is greater spontaneity at the grassroots level, particularly among the youth to form "interfaith circles" and promote dialogue with the aim of forging greater understanding and deepening friendships.

Such groups have mushroomed in recent years, to an extent - examples are the Developing Conversation Circles Programme and Encounters-in-Faiths led by seasoned interfaith activists Ms Guat Kwee See and Mr Farid Hamid respectively.

Such small group engagements done informally, but with a serious aim of conversing with each other, spell hope for social cohesion. They involve young professionals from various backgrounds. Meeting in homes and casual venues, they require few resources. Going beyond the usual niceties and theological debates, such groups delve into some of the more difficult, and crucial, faith-based responses to issues of our time: Religion and violence, gender relations, poverty, sexual orientation, environmental degradation.

Done consistently across a period of time, such engagements may eventually erase stereotypes, promote appreciation of our common humanity, instil a democratic personality and deepen trust and friendship. It is these "habits of the heart" that are needed urgently today, and these we can foster with greater interfaith engagement done respectfully, and with a clear aim of embracing diversity.

The writer is an interfaith activist and a postgraduate student at the Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore.

A childhood friend, a whimsical Wedding!

I wrote tis for my wedding planner on 28th Feb 2009:

things that make me hyperventilate:
pinks & blues, tea cups, roses & peony, birdcages, moroccan lamps, laces & pearls...ahhhh~

THEME for Reception Deco: Old World Charms (Elegant, warm & vintagey classic feel) or Shabby Chic (i dunno how to describe...somethin old/mediocre given refreshin, sweet with a hint of girly fun twist!)

hope we can somewhat combine some of these elements for our wedding deco with L.A.B bridal!

Somehow Kak Lynn manage to tweak ard with her stuff & came up with somethin beautiful for me & Iyuan for our weddin then. It didn't feel too much Old World or was it tt Shabby Chic, juz a touch of those here & there but I was definitely a Happy & Glowin bride!

Today, on 27th March 2011, i hyperventilated & my hands shook so bad the moment I entered Izsra's weddin reception! I was soo soo charmed!!! It's almost like what I had in mind for my own wedding!! I wanted to jump for joy, twirl ard with her, hug her & tell her how wonderful her reception felt!! But I had to control myself (as usual). It's so wonderful tt she found a vendor who can offer her such whimsical decor!! Food was superb & with Maher Zain songs played for the reception, ahh everythin felt so serene & beautiful!

But most of all, i'm so Happy for her to be blissfully married too & lookin so gorgeous! Congratulation Izsra & Faizal...may u have many many fun adventures ahead together!!

Charles LaBelle | Public Intimacy (Singapore) 2010-11

http://public-intimacy-contd.blogspot.com/
Charles LaBelle works are currently displayed at the Old Kallang Airport building for the Singapore Biennale 2011. This is his collection of drawings of buildings he has entered in Singapore.

Very nice with phrases some times too bizarre for me to understand. Nevertheless, welcome to Singapore, through the eyes of tis artist.

One tt draws some fond memories for me:

"palimpsestic architectonics, as well as in the spectatorial promenade. The loci of the art of memory bear the peculiar wax texture of a "filmic" set-a site of constant redrawing, a place where many stories both take place and take the place of memory"

somewhat i understood the lines in Bold.

Yes the frightening lil place is my Home

Seth Rogen, American comedy dude's impression of Singapore

There's no place perfect but a Home is where the Heart is. I love it here no matter how we bitch & complain abt the weather, the people or the Govt. And yes, so far, it's been so good.

Desserts@Le Chocolat Cafe

Iyuan said eateries with all that ambience have service that sucks. He's always right, i'm always bummed. Those in Ann Siang always fail us in flying colours (except Shots@Ann Siang Hill which i went to with Shasya)!

Le Chocolat Cafe is no different. The small seating area inside was all occupied by a bunch of chirpy middle-age people, so we had to go al-fresco & nobody came to serve the table, so i figured ok tis is a cafe perhaps I should order from the counter. But when another couple arrived at a table behind me, they were given menus, and orders were taken & they got served really fast (maybe cos they were more visible to the staff inside the cafe).BUT there was no excuse for me to wait for a terrible 30 mins to be served when the no. of customers were subsidin, not full-house. It sucks tt I have to go order my food on my own, and simply to take the cakes out of the display & make mocha by the staff take tt long! I stormed in & asked the cashier why they take so long to serve our food. A hungry woman is an angry woman! She said "oh! sorry we'll serve them soon." 2 minutes later...Her colleague came out and asked me "Sorry ma'am what was ur order?"

The young Malay staffs were obviously not attentive especially the cashier! I nearly wanted to say "Pls dun make Melayu more layu in the service dept!!!" but i held back. Thank God i didn't have PMS!

The Ice Mocha came too bland, the cakes though nice don't taste fresh. My raspberry chocolate cake had uneven dry spots, like it's been refrigerated for some time.

Worst first impression ever!

InstaGuilt

Tis past couple of weeks, i have been happily uploadin pics of things & food on my Instagram profile (yes i'm adaptin better than expected to my iPhone! lol any of my contacts here also on Instagram? add me! user:firestarlet). it's so delightful to be part of tis community as it is full of pictorial wonders! yes pics of people, food, flowers & everythin under the sun that make the heart warm with creative wonders & inspirations! It was not until the meat feast we had at Senor Santos that the guilt hit me.

Recently i have been goin thru the page #prayforjapan to see pictures put up by people in Japan as well as all ard the world to show solidarity with the nation as they face the aftermath of the recent 9.0 magnitude earthquake & tsunami, and what could be a nuclear meltdown after 3 nuclear reactor leaks in Fukushima. I shudder after lookin at pics of empty rows of supermarket shelves in Tokyo, i thought how insensitive could i be, i have a follower from Japan.

I feel so sorry for the Japanese for havin to face such a difficult time. But it is really admirable how they are copin with much calm & order. If such calamities were to happen here, God knows what kinda ruckus will take place. I hope that they won't face nuclear meltdowns & undergo anythin of Chernobyl magnitude. Juz the thought itself is so so scary! Food, water, environment... the whole ecosystem & food chain will be afftected, not juz in Japan i bet, for the rest of Asia too!

As much as I am hopin & prayin for the Libyans to be liberated from the clutches of Gaddafi's ruthless ruling, as well as the rest of the freedom fighters in the Arab nations and for their sufferings to be over....I felt a lil bit more for Japan cos Tokyo left quite an impression on me. The food especially, i juz fell in love with the melon ice-cream there! Sigh...and of course the beautiful peaceful lil town of Hakone. I really pray and hope that things will get better for them.

I dedicate my plate of chilli sauce to them! May ur spirits remain feisty as u face tis calamity!

What the HALAL??

Verily Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves...." (Surah Ar- Ra'd: 11)

French Muslims Confused Over Halal Restrictions

Read more: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,2048589,00.html#ixzz1E5Z0W2tl

The news suspended forks on their way to mouths, and sent supermarkets rushing to pull goods from shelves. Last month, the website Débat Halal claimed it had evidence that a popular brand of halal-certified poultry sausages marketed in France by a giant international food producer actually contain pork, rendering them forbidden — or haram — to Muslims. The accusation led many French Muslims to question how they can be sure that any of the halal food they buy meets certification standards — only to discover that no single set of standards exists for determining which products are halal and which aren't. Now, some observers are hoping that the haram hubbub may finally push France's Muslim leaders to agree upon a united code for the halal food sector — one of the biggest-booming niche markets in the nation.

The stir began when Débat Halal published a Jan. 16 report saying that tests had detected pork — a substance forbidden under both halal and kosher rules — within halal-branded poultry sausages produced by Herta, a unit of global food giant Nestlé. Counter-tests revealed by Herta a week later found no traces of pork in their Knacki Halal poultry sausages. Nevertheless, on Feb. 1, one of France's largest supermarket chains, Casino, removed the sausages from its stores to run its own test to "guarantee the strictest respect of halal certification." Still, the entire episode led Muslim consumers to wonder about the reliability of all the halal food they buy.

And for good reason. The flap over Herta's poultry sausages is only the latest controversy involving halal-certified food in France. In recent months, revelations of mechanized slaughtering by some industrial poultry Producers — rather than the manual culling and bleeding halal requires — have led some experts to estimate that up to 90% of poultry products labeled as halal in France don't meet even the most basic, generally recognized standards. While trying to find out exactly what the national norms are for halal certification, French Muslims have found there is no unified set of criteria or inspection procedures to verify a product as being halal. Instead, food companies work along differing standards overseen by rival factions of France's Islamic community. For Muslim consumers paying a premium to make sure that what they're eating is compatible with their religious Beliefs, it's an upsetting revelation.

"Questions of halal in France are overseen by the [country's] three most influential Mosques — in Paris, Evry, and Lyon — and they each have their own criteria, inspectors, companies and products they approve and endorse," says Abbas Bendali, director of the Paris-based Solis Conseil marketing consultancy, and an expert on France's halal food sector. "France's Muslim community is a mosaic of national origins, customs, tastes and habits to begin with, but unless rivalries can be overcome and a unified system regulating halal food can be created, the French halal market will remain splintered." (See more on the French brouhaha over Islam.)

That's bad news for halal food producers who want to build on the booming sector, currently worth $7.6 billion in annual sales in France. Though that only accounts for a tiny slice of the estimated $655 billion global halal market, experts say its growth in France has consistently been in double digits for nearly a decade. Until recently, the vast majority of that activity has traditionally come from fresh meat sold by halal butchers, which still accounts for about 85% of France's total halal market. But more recently, the fastest-growing niche in France's halal food sector has been halal-certified cold cuts, soups, sauces, ready-made dishes, baby foods, and other processed products marketed by international companies who had previously focused distribution to the Middle East and Africa. Recently, Muslim shoppers also find they have a wider choice of diverse, innovative and more convenient, ready-to-eat goods than they've been used to — most of them produced by multinational groups like Nestlé, Panzani, Fleury Michon, and Unilever.

"Many of the halal products these groups are selling in growing Numbers — whether it's foie gras or turkey "ham" — represent a real cultural revolution in Muslim tastes and consumer habits," says Bendali. "I think everyone would like to see that built upon, but that'll be harder to do if halal rules in France remain stratified and hazy."

Reaching a consensus on halal standards will be difficult among France's diverse, disparate Muslim population. Lacking an international structure like the Catholic Church to replicate at the national level, French Muslims remained largely unorganized until 2003, when government authorities helped found the French Council of the Muslim Faith as the representative of France's "official Islam." However, the organization has continually been undercut by rival factions and clashing loyalties that have made uniting French Muslims under a single structure — or unified halal Code — impossible.

That may change, however, as shoppers and companies start demanding clear halal criteria verified by inspectors that France's entire Muslim community can trust. If that happens, it will mark another revolution alongside France's growing halal boom: the rise of the French Muslim consumer as an economic force both marketers and officials must reckon with.
