Render Ur Support

Make Poverty History is one of the biggest campaign being launched tis year in both Britain & America(ONE). It's a fight against Malnutrition, AIDS, conflict and illiteracy for those in less fortunate countries. It is an appeal towards the G8 gathering of powerful world leaders.

The G8 leaders have it within their power to alter history. They will only have the will to do so if tens of thousands of people show them that enough is enough.By doubling aid, fully cancelling debt, and delivering trade justice, the G8 could change the future for millions of men, women and children.

Bush, Blair working on Africa debt-relief plan
    CTV.ca News Staff

U.S. President George Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair said they are working toward a plan that would cancel the debt of developing African countries, after meeting in Washington Tuesday.

But the two leaders failed to agree on Blair's calls to double aid to the troubled continent and address global warming

African nations on the path to reform "should not be burdened with mountains of debt," Bush said.

"Our countries are developing a proposal for the G8 that will eliminate 100 per cent of that debt."

Blair has been urging wealthy countries to write off debts owed by the world's poorest countries.

But there is still no firm deal.

"We are well on the way to agreement on that," Blair said at the joint news conference in Washington on Tuesday.

He is expected to push for the plan when he hosts the summit of industrial nations in Scotland next month.

Bush wants the debt relief plan to target those countries which commit to open governing and free markets.

Blair, however, wants to ensure organizations such as the World Bank and International Monetary Fund are given back any debt that they forgive.

Meanwhile, Bush announced an expected $674-million strategy to address humanitarian aid and the growing hunger crisis in Africa.

"We urge the international community to join us in committing greater resources to the humanitarian need in Africa," Bush said at the conference, during which he congratulated Blair for his election victory.

While the commitment stops short of Blair's goals for debt relief and aid for Africa, he told reporters the two leaders share a desire to help the continent.

As this year's chairman of the G8, Blair has made Africa his focus.

Blair and Bush are close allies but they have not always been unable to find agreement on how to tackle aid to Africa.

With a few weeks to go before the summit in Scotland, Blair indicated before heading into the meeting that he didn't expect any breakthroughs during his visit to the United States.

Bush disagrees with Blair's strategy for how to finance the debt-relief plan.

He opposes a plan backed by British finance minister Gordon Brown to raise an additional $50 billion US for Africa a year by selling bonds on the world's capital markets.

Blair also wants summit participants to double current Africa aid funding.

But Bush reasserted his position, saying the United States has already tripled its aid during his years in office.

I hope Blair would really do somethin abt Africa! And also not to overlook other developing & poor countries. Make Poverty History people!
