Morning Lesson in the Pantry

Was greeted by a Chinese colleague readin the newspaper & asking around "What is Khalwat? What is Khalwat?" when I stepped into the pantry this morning.

No one answered, either people were too busy sippin drinks, unloadin food into their lockers or they do not have any idea what is he questioning abt.

I joined a few who took a glance at the papers where a fine-lookin Malay man made the headlines of possibly facing charges of Zina & Khalwat for being entangled in the scandal of a political figure in Malaysia, posting her nude/semi-naked photos somewhere..apparently he was her ex-flame & the Malaysian police are after him as they suspect he is involved in such activities mentioned above. I believe most are aware that in Islam, such activities are haram, not permissible/forbidden although in reality, hurhur many break such rules.

Whatever...i'm not concerned abt the scandal part, rather it was interesting why the newspaper feature these 2 Islamic terms. Is it to make people mock or ridicule the Islamic/Malaysian ruling of punishing someone for having sex/intimate relationship out of wedlock or is it targetting at the scandalous Malaysian politcs nowadays. Anyways, my explanation, for my Chinese colleague, who is a Catholic & some others who began to look interested & just as curious:

Zina- adultery or sex out of a marriage bond

Khalwat- being intimate with a person of the opposite gender who are not spouses (incl. kissing or petting aka making out)

Then one of my colleague asked "What if u r married?" Without thinkin much I said...Married= everything's Halal lah! Halal=permissible by the Syariah Law. Roars of laughter echoed the walls of the pantry after that. What is the point of getting married if sex or making out with your spouse is still considered sinful or forbidden? When u are married, it is Your Responsibilities to be makin love to your spouse & makin babies! tickled by my comments, another colleague, an Indian said..."Ok, let's have Islamic lessons on Friday mornings!" hahah i'd be glad to introduce a lil bit more abt Islam & unveil the truths from some of the misconceptions people have about the religion. if only people wanna spare some time to listen & not give me that ridiculous looks

I hope my explanations open up the minds of my colleagues instead of makin it look like it's a religion that encourages perversion, where many try to point islam to such. I hope they step back & reflect about marriage & how tis aspect of Syariah law actually preserves a person's dignity & social rights in the most positive aspect & impact, just like many others established but what seem to protect people's rights are also not free from abuse & misuse as there are also a bunch of bigots & ignorant morons out there who bastardise the laws, promotin chaos & disorder!! oh wells, that's a whole bunch of other things altogether.

bottom line is MARRIAGE; may be a licence to pleasures but it comes with heavy responsibilities, for a Muslim at least. (especially for those who aims to marry up to 4 wives! *bluek*)

  2. and pains....hahaha.

Its great that your colleagues ask you.

I'm still irritated when mine keep telling its "halal" cos theres no pork...surprisingly enough...my ang moh friends would understand my Islamic dietary requirements better. All i need to say is...its like Kosher and they go "aaaah"

A lot of bad publicity for our religion nowadays...hopefully your enlightened colleagues will pass on their knowledge.

    Cheers!

  4. Salam,
I think there are the same rules for marriage in the the three monotheistic religions, except for the option of having four spouses. The latter has its very hard conditions and even harder responsabilities to fulfil and it's not a game as might think many. Hallal word does not apply only for food but for everything as it simply means permitted or allowed by sharia'h, the law that has been promulgated by the ONE who knows us perfectly as it's He who created us for worshiping him and we should be HIS servants (slaves) ALLAH (SWT). Cheers
    Salam

  6. nebride: Alhamdulillah, thank u for the confidence, hope to bring friends & colleagues to a better perspective of what I believe in :)

shuhadar: yes, there'll definitely be pains but must be patient, part & parcel of marriage life or life in general ;)
babe, dun give up on them. every time ur colleagues forget, remind them...every time u remind them, u do ur bit in clarifying for what u believe in (take it like a lil jihad). may God reward u for doing that because u see, they can get quite confused when they see other Muslims eat at stalls/restaurants that says "No Pork, No Lard", they assume that equates to Halal meats sold. sometimes i wish i could take it like it is a conspiracy...idiot food sellers tryin to confuse us Muslims, luring us to eat non-Halal chicken or beef for their own profits, but at the same time, there's a whole bunch of us here who don't stand our ground & simply go with the flow of "No Pork, No Lard" means Go Ahead, Eat even if They Know the chicken or beef are not slaughtered according to our religious rituals. so, yes juz do ur part & explain & smile & hope it gets into their heads one fine day!

iqlimaadam: hahah & ur responsibility is gettin heavier by the day! we can't wait to check out ur junior!!

saharaman: salam to u too, my Algerian brother. indeed i echo ur explanations..it's beautiful how u n i are culturally different yet Islam binds us, servin The One Creator together.

princessdyanne: hee thank u, when the need arise, i juz can't keep quite..it's nice to be able to share some knowledge to non-Muslims who actually want to know/are ready to listen :)
